I have been so busy with pre-N.E.W.T. studying this term that I've almost completely forgotten about this Muggle Studies assignment! I mean, it's not exactly necessary, seeing as my parents are both dentists, but I don't want to risk bad marks in any of my classes.

I've been spending all of my spare time knitting for S.P.E.W. and everything I've been hiding around the Gryffindor common room has been disappearing. I just hope it's not Dobby who's taking them all again this time.

The Pumpkin Ball is coming up very soon and no one's asked to go yet. Not that I'm worried or anything, of course...

But anyway, where has Ron been lately?

I tried ordering Prefects Who Gained Power through the Wireless Wizarding Network but this morning when the owl post came, I receieved Charm Your Own Cheese instead. I don't think it's returnable, so does anyone want it?

Has anyone read Rita Skeeter's article in The Evening Prophet last night about the delay at King's Cross? It seems that she's found a way to dodge my, erm, blackmail, but honestly, it's not like she has to continue writing that rubbish about people. She didn't even spell Professor Lupin's name right! I can't believe she's still going on about Half-Breeds being dangerous. What complete nonsense. She even criticised Professor Moody and Tonks for no reason! (Scarlet woman. [[snort]] That reminds me of what Ron said once.) I hope none of you are feeling down about what that horrible woman wrote. I'm going to find a way to get rid of her for good this year, I just know it.

Yesterday must've been the first time the Hogwarts Express has ever been behind schedule. I asked Professor Lupin about it, but he said he wasn't sure who had caused the delay. Both of us are pretty sure that Voldemort has something to do with it. If you ask me, I'd say that the Death Eaters who are away at Azkaban right now have children at Hogwarts who are following in their parents' footsteps. I could've sworn I saw Malfoy and a couple of other Slytherins slip out of the barrier right before it became blocked. Why would anyone want to explode the Prefects' compartment?

I do hope all of you were paying attention during Professor Dumbledore's start-of-term speech at the feast last night. I've completely forgotten that the Pumpkin Ball is this year. I've read about it in Hogwarts, A History -- every seven years the dance is held to increase inter-house harmony; and all of the professors put their work into decorating the Great Hall. I can't wait to see what Professor Flitwick and Professor McGonagall have planned and I do hope that Ron asks me to be his dance partner.

I'm quite excited about the classes I'm taking; we received our course schedules this morning at breakfast, and I must say that I have quite a full load this term. Of course, I've learned not to overwhelm myself like I did in third year again. I'll have plenty of time to knit and campaign for S.P.E.W. By the way, I'm still selling badges if you want any. They're only two knuts a piece and all profits go to promoting Elfish well-fare. Pamphlets are free.

Also, congratulations to Cho Chang on becoming Head Girl.

Filtered Against Neville Longbottom [26 Aug 2004|11:43pm]
The Magical Horticulture Exhibit was absolutely brilliant. I learned loads, and I've used up all of my parchment and ink taking notes. I think Neville really enjoyed himself too, which was great to see. Can you believe his "Serial Speller" actually followed him to the Exhibit? It seems rather suspicious to me. I mean, at first I thought that she was just another troublemaker, but she seems to have found a specific person to target. I'm no Auror, but I have the feeling that someone is trying to get rid of Neville... but why? Why would anyone think of Neville Longbottom as a threat?

Of course I could be wrong and no one is out for Neville's head afterall, but I'm still worried.

Things have finally settled down and I've gotten a chance to finish the elf hats I've been working on. I also got through three more books on Defensive magic, although it was only a bit of light reading in my opinion.

Harry, I'm sorry about how late this is, but it took me a lot longer than I had anticipated... well, I finished your scarf. I know I was horrible wasn't very good at knitting before, but I've gotten better, really. I meant to have it finished by your birthday, but I kept messing up the lion's paws and I had to reknit it twenty-seven times. I do hope you like it.

Is there something going on between Seamus and Parvati? I don't like to gossip or anything, but I can't help but wonder. It seems like everyone is talking about everyone else these days and getting together with one another. Students should be more focused on schoolwork. Honestly.

I haven't written to Viktor in a while.

Well, my O.W.L. results finally arrived last night. My scores were decent, I suppose... but an Exceeds Expectations in Astronomy? I'm so disappointed in myself. I mean, my mediocre Astronomy grade may be accounted to Professor McGonagall and Hagrid being attacked in the middle of the exam, but that's no excuse. I'm going to increase my studying to nine hours a day. Of course, it is still the summer holiday, which is why I'm going a bit easy on myself.

I'm not sure if I should be doing this, but I think you should consider contacting Percy. He's under a lot of stress right now at the Ministry and I'm sure he could really use some support from his family.

Everything seems to be in order -- the plan is set, all we have to do now is wait. I don't really know how to feel right now, but I'm a bit apprehensive and relieved at the same time. I think I'm just going to stop looking at the dark side of things (why am I always the cynical one?). I mean, it'd be really great having Sirius back.

And sharing a broom with Ron wouldn't be that bad.

Things have been very strained in the house. No one knows what exactly is safe to say anymore, so we've all been rather quiet. Lucky that the twins are coming tomorrow; we could all use a little break. Once they're here, we can fill them in and get on with what it is we're all dreading to do.

Can you believe Harry wants to go through with it? Honestly. Sirius pops up for one second in the mirror, which I believe to be shifty anyway, and Harry's hero complex rises again. I mean, can we even trust it? It could be faulty, or even full of dark magic. We don't even know if that was really Sirius at the other end. It could very well be like The Mirror of Erised, Tom Riddle's diary, or even another trick from V-Voldemort.

I suppose we're going to have to go with Harry to the Ministry whether we want to or not. He's going to go through with it no matter what we say, so we might as well be there to support him. He does need one person to keep a lookout and one person to hold the rope while he goes beyond the veil, doesn't he? I'm worried though; even the most powerful strengthening charm may not hold up in, well, in Death.

We're going to need someone to do the charm too -- we're all still underage. Fred and George are visiting soon so they could help, but they'll want to know what it's for. Ginny isn't going to stand by and not know what's going on either, and once they all find out, they're going to want to come with us. I do hope Harry realises that he's getting everyone involved, even though that may not be his intention.

Oh, Ron, I really don't want to go through with this. Harry could never come back out of there! What if the plan fails? No one is supposed to even know about that veil; why do you think it was kept in the Department of Mysteries? It must be highly dangerous and unstable, I mean, didn't you see what the other rooms were full of? Time, intelligence, and who knows what else? (Oh, by the way, have your brain scars healed yet?)

You know what? I just had a brilliant idea. Luna Lovegood. I know she's a bit odd to say the least, but she seemed to know more about the veil than she was letting on. I don't know how she would help, but it would be wise to have her with us, wouldn't it? I'm not sure why, but I have a feeling that she should be there. So that's everyone who was at the Ministry with us the first time. Oh wait, I've forgotten about Neville! (How ironic...) But we certainly don't need him with us. He has to watch Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes for Fred and George anyway. We just won't tell him.

How do you feel about all of this? I know it's a lot of people, but there's really no way around it. Shall we run it by Harry after dinner?

Today as I was organising some information on my S.P.E.W. campaign, I thought of Kreacher.  I can't believe that I had forgotten about him all summer.  I really hadn't any idea about what the members of the Order were planning to do with him, seeing as Sirius is dead and Kreacher's allegiance was really quite questionable.  I decided that the only thing I could do was ask Professor Lupin.  I figured that he would understand the plight of the oppressed in wizarding society moreso than Professor McGonagall.  I most definitely was not going to ask Snape, or bother Dumbledore with such an issue.

I didn't think that sending an owl to Grimmauld Place would be wise -- what if it were to be intercepted?  I took a handful of Floo Powder and stuck my head into the Weasley fireplace, and Merlin's beard, my hands and knees were sore within about a minute.  I don't know how Sirius did it all those times.  Anyway, we had a bit of a chat about elf rights, the Order, and Harry.  Oh, and Ron, if you read the part about third year, please... er, ignore it.  It's no big deal, really.

I owled Rita Skeeter two weeks ago, and I finally received a return-owl yesterday. I knew she couldn't pass up the offer, and it appeared that she was interested afterall. We made a little agreement. I'll keep her out of Azkaban and let her return to her old job at the Prophet as long as she keeps her Quicknotes Quill out of it and leaves Harry and Hagrid alone. Not only that, but she'll have to send a free copy of The Daily Prophet to every student who requests it. Isn't it blackmail brilliant?

Well, I arrived at the Burrow early this morning and my clothes were rather sooty. I would have fixed them up easily with Scourgify, but honestly, why aren't underaged wizards allowed to preform simple household charms? Fortunately Mrs. Weasley was there to help, though I must say that I do not enjoy traveling by Floo Powder at all. I should have taken the Knight Bus with Harry. I haven't heard word from him yet, but I expect he'll be arriving soon.

It's been great seeing Ron and Ginny again, although not much has changed since term ended a couple of weeks ago. We're still waiting up for Harry; I don't know what Ginny and Ron are up to -- I reckon Ginny's playing with Crookshanks outside and Ron's flying on his Cleanspeed Cleanswap Cleaningsp Cleansweep, because I can't hear a noise from either of them. I could be wrong of course, but at least their absence has given me a bit of peace and quiet to do some work.

I've been using a few simple spells (none that would get me expelled, of course) to make some badges for S.P.E.W. It went rather well, although I sort of... well, I didn't mean to, but I accidentally ignited my first batch on fire with the tip of my wand. Oh well, they're still fully functional and you can still make out the lettering. I've been wanting to make badges that flash different colors when you press them, like the 'Potter Stinks' ones from fourth year (sorry, Harry!), but I'll need real spells for those, and I can't afford to do that for at least another month-and-a-half.

Please join the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. Badges are only two knuts a piece and all proceeds will go to benefit our cause. Please send order forms to me by owl, or let me know personally if you would like to purchase one (or two, or seven). Badges will be sent to you by owl within two days of receiving your order. Thank you!

While I made my purchases today at Diagon Alley, I got a chance to visit Fred and George's shop. They're doing rather well, actually, and I was pleasantly surprised. An unpleasant surprise, however, is that they were still sporting their hideous dragonhide jackets. Their inventions are absolutely brilliant, I'm afraid I'll have to admit. It's a wonder why they didn't scrape more O.W.L.s. If they had only stayed till the end of term, they would have unquestionably received more than a handful of N.E.W.T.s. Even their simple candies put some of the most complex spells in use; I'm very impressed.

Of course, I've done loads of research already and I think that I've learned plenty already. I've even practiced several wand movements and incantations we'll be needing next year for N.E.W.T.s, although who knows what may come up before then.

Edit to my latest entry:
I had thought that Ron's parents would be at headquarters for the Order away from the Burrow all summer, but after receiving his owl, I found out that they are still around. This is brilliant then! I can tell my mother as soon as possible, and she'll be able to stop worrying. Harry hasn't written him back yet -- I hope nothing's gone wrong and that he'll still be able to come.

I've decided to go to Diagon Alley tomorrow for some supplies and some cat tonic for Crookshanks. If anyone wants to meet me, let me know. I'll be at Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor around noon. Then from Monday till the end of term I'll be at the Burrow, unless something else comes up.

I was happy to receive a letter from Ron today inviting me to the Burrow for the rest of the summer. I asked my parents about it and my mother was rather hesitant to let me go, which was odd. She seemed to think that it's inappropriate for a girl to stay with two boys without parent supervision. Honestly. I had to tell her that Ginny would probably be there too and that there is absolutely nothing going on between me and Harry or Ron. I sometimes forget how worried my mother can get. It's a good thing that I decided not to tell her about a certain most evil wizard of all time on the loose whose life goal is to kill my best friend.

I haven't gotten an answer from Ron yet as to when I should arrive at the Burrow, but I'm hoping that I will soon. I've been getting loads done at home. I've already taken notes on twenty-one chapters of A Guide to Ancient Runes but I highly doubt that either Harry or Ron have done anything yet. I'll have to write them summer study schedules when I see them. I don't see how they're not worried about N.E.W.T. level classes, and I am definitely not letting them borrow my notes this year.

A trip to Diagon Alley would be nice. I need new quills (I've worn them all down) and a few more rolls of parchment. I think I also have to make a stop at the Magical Menagerie. Crookshanks has been coughing up funny-colored furballs lately.

I'm really excited about keeping a journal this year; the students at Hogwarts will finally understand some Muggle technology. Also, I'm sure there are loads of things to write about once the term at Hogwarts starts. I'm taking more classes than anyone this year. I must be ready for the N.E.W.T.s next year. If I have to stay up late studying and making hats for the house elves again, then I will. I do hope they're not being worked too hard.

I need to make myself a new study schedule. I'll make one for Harry and Ron while I'm at it, seeing as they need it more than I do...

Speaking of Ron, he nearly had a fit when he saw my journal layout.

"Pink?" he said, "Pink, Hermione? Are you mad?"

Aaargh, sometimes I want to strangle him! It's as if he still hasn't yet noticed that I, Hermione Granger, am indeed a girl.
